Tips
- Stop application of steroid.
- Discontinuation of cosmetic procedures.
- Topical treatment may not show peak efficacy until 3 months of daily treatment.
Medical treatment options of perioral dermatitis
Topical
- Topical pimecrolimus 1% : twice a day for 4 weeks
- Topical tetracycline : twice daily.
- Topical clindamycin lotion or gel.
- Topical sulfur preparations.
- Topical erythromycin.
- Topical metronidazole: 0.75%-1% twice daily for 8-14 weeks.
- Topical Azelaic acid : 20% twice daily for 2-6 weeks.
- Topical adapalene gel: once daily for 4 weeks.
Systemic
- Oral tetracycline: 250 mg 3 times daily for a week, then twice daily for 2 to 3 months.
- Doxycycline: 100 mg twice day.
- Minocycline 100 mg twice a day or once a day
- Oral erythromycin : 250 mg to 500 mg daily.
- Oral isotretinoin: 0.2 mg/kg per day then tapering to 0.1 to 0.05 mg/kg per day in resistant cases.
- Azithromycin : 500 mg once daily for 3 consecutive days weekly for 4–8 weeks.
Physical treatment of perioral dermatitis
- Photodynamic therapy: once weekly for approximately 4 weeks.
